Atlanta is home to a full eleven percent of WaHo locations. We always knew our friends in the South were hogging all the Waffle Houses, but we had no idea they were stashing more than 100 in one effin' city... Through the help of Google Earth, mapsbynik crunched some numbers on WaHo density, pinpointing the top 21 most highly concentrated areas in the nation. While places like Greenville, South Carolina might be proud of their 34 Houses, Atlanta blew everyone out of the maple syrup with 132 total locations.

The map shown here is a truly quick-and-dirty visualization of the distribution and density of Waffle House locations as of summer 2012. It started as a way for me to play with 3D in Google Earth, but that giant spike in Atlanta was interesting enough that I thought it worth sharing. The deadly shooting is the second of its kind at this location over a span of 53 weeks, when Deijon Bedgood was killed after a fight broke out between two groups of people. Raymond Ladd and Shemar Franklin were arrested for Bedgood’s murder and are still awaiting trial.

As of summer 2012, Atlanta is home to roughly 11% of all Waffle House locations. You can download the complete list of 1,988 Waffle House locations data as an Excel file, along with geo-coded addresses, phone numbers and open hours from our data store. We are committed to providing value to our customers by recognizing the need for quality data that is available for immediate download. Beyond Atlanta, the map shows that Waffle House is indeed primarily a Southern phenomenon with a few surprising and unusual patterns in a couple metro areas. Phoenix and Denver have a handful of locations, but there are none in California. Amarillo has five locations, but San Antonio has zero despite being a much larger city at the junction of two major interstates.

Beloved for its delicious, cheap food and healthy doses of complete chaos, Waffle House holds a unique place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many Americans. Waffle House has also garnered a reputation for being a hotbed of absolute insanity. Two other people were injured during the fight and treated at a local hospital. A popular metro Atlanta Waffle House abruptly shut its doors down for good on Monday, according to Decaturish.

The South's favorite diner and an Atlanta original, Waffle House has been providing customers with the consummate short-order culinary experience since the first restaurant opened in Avondale Estates in 1955. The bustling staff, open kitchen, jukebox tunes, sizzling grill, and 24-hour convenience all contribute to WaHo's singular charm. Waffle House has a reputation for omnipresence in the South and that seems especially true in the Atlanta area. The Atlanta quad has nearly three times the number of restaurants as the next highest. And that next highest quad, Cartersville, actually contains most of the north Atlanta metro area.
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Waffle House is famed for more than just its all-day breakfast. The restaurant chain’s preparedness for natural disasters, which allows its locations to stay open throughout weather crises or open shortly after, has earned it a storm distinction with FEMA. Today, the Waffle House system is more than 1,900 locations in 25 states. A golden vision rises above the roadway, beckoning the weary traveler or the hungry local.

In fact, a measurement tool called the Waffle House Index can be used to analyze a storm’s severity and the effect it can have on communities. Its classifications of green, yellow, and red indicate how severe a storm is based on how well Waffle House can operate during it. The term was coined by former FEMA administrator Craig Fugate following the Joplin tornado in May 2011. The storm, which caused over $2.8 billion in damage and 158 casualties, was not enough to close down either of the Waffle House locations in Joplin. The breakfast chain remained open throughout the storm, with a prepared limited menu that allowed it to serve food even during power outages. It was Labor Day weekend, 1955, when Waffle House opened the doors of its first restaurant in Avondale Estates, Atlanta.

A spokesperson with Ohio State said that university police work closely with Columbus police but that CPD is the lead agency in this investigation. There will be several fields for your name, email address, birthday, and zip code. Staffers told the publication that they were told on Thursday and Friday that Sunday would be the last day the store was open.
Immediately north of Atlanta, the Cartersville, Georgia quad is next highest on the list with 45 locations. These are followed by Greenville, SC (34), Athens, GA (29) and Fort Worth, TX (25). The Atlanta metro area's dominance on the map is not unexpected, though its scale is somewhat surprising. The first Waffle House restaurant opened in the Avondale Estates, an inner Atlanta suburb, in 1955 and the company is headquartered in Norcross, another nearby suburb. It significantly beat out Cartersville, which includes most of Atlanta's highly populated northern suburbs.
Booths in this Conyers location overlook I-20, the cars zipping by serving as reminders of the irreplaceable role WaHo has played on countless road trips. As with other open-all-night eateries (including White Castle, Krystal, Denny's, Steak 'n Shake, IHOP and Krispy Kreme, as well as convenience store chain Sheetz), Waffle House has developed into a cultural icon. Part of their fame (especially that of Waffle House) is that they are so prominent along Interstate highways in the South.

The truth is, news costs money to produce, and we are proud that we have never put our stories behind an expensive paywall. Restaurant addresses were taken from wafflehouse.com and geocoded with services from both Google and MapQuest. As a set, the locations are generally accurate but no given restaurant is guaranteed to be correct. No matter the reason, Waffle House has developed a cult following. Across its more than 2,100 restaurants in 25 states, Waffle House typically sees annual revenues exceeding $1.3 billion.
I then used Proc SGmap to plot the data as red dots on a map. The map definitely shows a high concentration in Atlanta, GA (that's where the Waffle House restaurants first started). Do you find yourself on the road during the holidays, and looking for a place to eat that's still open? Or perhaps you're like me - I don't cook at home, and I'm not really into visiting family for the holidays and eating with them. It's a chain of small restaurants (or rather a diner with a grill) that's open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The Waffle House even has a reputation of staying open during weather emergencies (see the Waffle House Index).
