ACL-American Cruise Lines launches first-ever California voyage (ship American Jazz)
From New Orleans, guests will sail 1,393 miles through 10 states, exploring historic gems in the south, the rolling farmland of the midwest, and the beauty of the upper river. This segment includes travel from Jackson, Wyoming to New Orleans, Louisiana, where guests will board American Symphony for the next leg of the journey. Now that the itinerary appears to be permanently changed, future guests can opt to fly into and out of Sacramento, which is what many onboard wished they had been advised to do. Despite a little frustration with the change, overall satisfaction onboard was high. Several people who discovered Cruise Critic was along for the cruise felt bad that we had experienced what they feared was a less than perfect cruise.

The improved ship design allows "bow landings" via a retractable and rotating gangway (passenger bridge) that extends from Main Deck (deck 1) to the dock or directly onto the river bank. This feature is available on all traditional-design US paddlewheel riverboats and provides expanded options for river cruise itineraries unmatched by most newbuild river cruise ships. The line will sail a new 61-day itinerary exploring 20 states across four time zones, the company announced this week. The Great United States sailing, which debuts next fall, will start at the Pacific coast and head east, including visits to several national parks. American is also offering two new itineraries in the northeast, an eight-day Downeast Maine cruise (roundtrip from Bangor, Maine); and an eight-day Yankee Seaports cruise (between Boston, Massachusetts and New York City). In the southeast, American is offering a new, eight-day Florida Gulf Coast and Keys cruise roundtrip from St. Petersburg, Flordia, including exploration of the Dry Tortugas and Everglades national parks.
Small Ship Cruising Done Perfectly
Both events were attended by the passengers and crew, as well as ACL executives and VIP guests (state and local officials). On October 11, 2018, vessel's lower bow (hull section) was moved out of drydock (wheeled out from Fabrication Building No 4) to shipyard's Assembly Launchways. The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) on October 13, 2019 (5 weeks ahead of schedule). After the float-out, the boat was berthed in shipyard’s East Outfitting Basin to receive its upper deck blocks and final outfitting. Unlike anything seen before along American waterways, the innovative vessel brings a new dimension to river cruising in the USA. American Jazz integrates contemporary design with no sacrificing the comfort that American Cruise Lines is popular for.
Call ports include Bar Harbor ME, Belfast ME, Camden ME, Rockland ME, Boothbay Harbor ME, Bath ME. The Jazz ship could be seasonally deployed on the US West Coast to operate Snake and Columbia river cruises. MS American Jazz features innovative interior design concepts - from the 4-story glass-walled Vestibule (Atrium) to spacious indoor and outdoor lounges, large open-deck spaces, floor-ceiling windows throughout the vessel. The 4-decks high Vestibule has floor-ceiling windows (portside and starboard) and SkyLight (transparent glass-roof cover) that allows natural light into the ship's interior. The new fleet has been designed to sail in all types of water; small enough for New England harbors, stable enough for the Alaska Inside Passage and with a draft shallow enough for the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. American Glory will sail on the East Coast and the rest of the fleet will be deployed across the U.S. All of the ships are being constructed by the line's sister shipyard, Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland.
The second leg is on the Mississippi River (ship American Symphony/from New Orleans to Saint Paul). The third leg is from Maine to New York/up the Hudson River (ship American Independence). With rebooking was offered 125% FCC (Future Cruise Credit based on the fares paid for the canceled sailings) valid before December 31, 2021. In January 2023 ACL announced the fleetwide introduction of high-speed (Starlink-provided) satellite internet and Wi-Fi services. Starlink's LEO satellites (positioned at low Earth orbit) provide stable and fast internet connections to moving marine vessels and ACL beta-tested the service in 2022.
Along this journey, guests will discover the rich maritime history of the region as the vessel cruises past the historic homes of sea captains and shipbuilders of years gone by, as well as the working waterfront communities of today. Guests we spoke to were quick to sing the praises of the crew, the food and the overall itinerary, but equally quick to voice their opinion regarding the sudden change in the starting point. Some were not happy with the change, primarily because it affected travel plans. We felt the cruise line adapted quite well, by using the motor coaches that travel with the ship to transport guests from San Francisco hotels to the ship waiting in Sacramento on embarkation day. On departure day, guests with flights from San Francisco or post-cruise hotel packages were also taken by coach. We were lucky enough to visit with president and CEO, Charles Robertson, who was onboard the ship for part of the cruise.
